Time Out says

UPDATE, February 17: Due to the COVID-19 situation, The Nuclear Family has been postponed from March 12 to 22, 2020 to March 2021.

Checkpoint Theatre is back with a hilarious new comedy, The Nuclear Family, written and directed by Huzir Sulaiman. A follow-up to his classic 1998 comedy Atomic Jaya, this political satire features a stellar all-female cast: Jo Tan, Rebekah Sangeetha Dorai, Munah Bagharib, and Amanda Tee, taking on more than 30 zany characters and musical numbers by electronic duo, .gif.

The story takes place twenty-one years after nuclear physicist Dr Mary Yuen sabotaged Malaysia’s atomic bomb project and left for the United States. Tired of being a foreigner, she returns to Malaysia, finding herself once again at the mercy of politicians with absurd nuclear ambitions and larger-than-life egos. In an era of climate change, nuclear proliferation, and other apocalyptic anxieties, how much is Mary willing to sacrifice for her home and her family?

“As with Atomic Jaya, The Nuclear Family is my love letter to Malaysia in all its complexity, brilliance, disappointment, and joy,” playwright Huzir Sulaiman says. “With so much tension and anxiety in the headlines every day, I wanted to create a wildly funny, surreal, and delightful way to navigate through these issues.”

Sharply witty and deliciously cheeky, Huzir Sulaiman’s The Nuclear Family is a homecoming of explosive proportions guaranteed to blow your mind!
