Art Encounters, a travelling artist's studio and gallery capturing the creative process within repurposed shipping containers is now back, this time at Bugis Town (Bugis Junction, Bugis+ and Bugis Street). The art activation experience, which is organised by Art Outreach and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, aims to promote art appreciation and reveal the creative process behind art-making through unique art installations at unexpected places.
Bugis Town is the playground for Art Encounters from August 21 to October 3. You can admire the installations at Bugis+ Open Plaza daily, from 11am to 8pm. The featured artist for this edition is Singapore-based British artist, Chloë Manasseh, who is known for her colourful landscapes and imaginative paintings. The three main installations at Bugis+ are meant to be experienced as a journey:
Welcome Container
Start the journey at the Welcome Container where you can learn more about the Art Encounters initiative. Check out the wall of postcards featuring works by local street art collective RSCLS who are also responsible for painting the external facade of the containers. Visitors can take a photo with the wall to collect a set of free postcards that will be their ticket to enjoying various promotions in the Bugis Town malls.
Gallery Container
Singapore is a City in a Garden? Manasseh reimagines this with this section of the exhibition that features a series of large-format botanical paintings. Visitors can also see her creative process unravel as she will be live-painting them in the first two weeks. Bean bags featuring her works will be available for visitors to sit and admire the art, as well as a collaborative canvas to leave their mark on.
Studio Container
Taking inspiration from the natural landscape, Manasseh transforms the container into an immersive environment which you can also escape into. Most of her work revolves around establishing connections to the physical spaces around us. For Art Encounters, she will be live painting floor-to-ceiling visuals around a wooden boat installation and cascading flora, complete with sound and smells for a full sensory experience. The container will feature a custom ambient scent designed by homegrown fragrance label Scent by SIX in collaboration with the artist. The container will evoke a sense of exotic escapism for all those who take the time to walk through these installations. The floor of the container will be covered in pools of resin embedded with flora and fauna, to evoke senses of water, freedom and life. The boat is also a nod to Bugis' seafaring history in Singapore.
Besides exploring the containers, you can also encounter Manasseh's art beyond the exhibition by searching for the hidden installations around Bugis Town. While doing so, take part in the Bugis Town Art Encounters Instagram Contest!
