Ever wanted to experience Chinatown in a different light? Across two weekends, the Five Footway Festival lets you relive the old-school ways of the heritage-rich district through a series of performances and workshops. Smith Street comes alive with vibrant lion and dragon dance, puppet shows, poetry recitals, martial arts and Chinese opera. Every afternoon, be treated to singing performances in Cantonese and Mandarin by local stars.
There’s more to discover beyond the performances, with free activities dotted along the strip. Revisit childhood games like five stones, pick-up sticks, glass marbles and paper flipping, or try your hand at cultural crafts such as Chinese calligraphy and traditional paper cutting. You can even transform your look with a Beijing Opera make-up experience.
Elsewhere are hands-on workshops, such as lessons in tea appreciation, Chinese opera and storytelling. Learn how to make lao po bing, aka wife cafe, a traditional pastry made with sweet wintermelon, or design your own Chinese-style handbag. You can register your interest for each workshop here.
