What's on at Singapore Toy, Game and Comic Convention

Andre Frois finds out what to expect at this year's edition of STGCC

To fête its tenth year, the Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention (STGCC) presents an extravagant treat for Star Wars fans. The sister event of New York Comic Con, Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo, OZ Comic Con, PAX and Star Wars Celebration, STGCC 2017 spans not only three entire halls in the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre, but also transforms Orchard Road into an interactive and multi-faceted homage to the Star Wars franchise, from September 1 to 10. An installation of the Millennium Falcon in South-East Asia stands proudly in ION Orchard, while young Padawans aged four to 12 train as Jedi Masters at South-East Asia’s very first Padawan Training. BB-8 of the The Force Awakens also attends this outdoor spectacle via virtual reality.

The main STGCC exhibition hosts world-famous comic book illustrators like Hiro Kanzaki, Adi Granov, Frank Cho and Singapore’s own Sonny Liew. Trading card enthusiasts shouldn’t miss it – they can get hold of new and unreleased cards from the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Final Fantasy Trading Card Game and Yu-Gi-Oh!

'STGCC has come a long way since starting out ten years ago, and today this iconic event is synonymous with pop culture, comics, toys and games,’ explains Lin Koh, assistant project director at Reed Exhibitions, the organiser of STGCC. ‘This year’s edition is our biggest yet. We’re dedicating an entire hall to host the Good Game Experience for gaming fans, which provides them with an exhilarating programme of entertainment and tournaments. The Akiba Zone mimics Tokyo’s Electric Town, Akihabara, which is famous for Japanese subculture and throngs with cosplayers. There’s also an entire zone dedicated to Star Wars: it’s packed with larger-than-life vehicle replicas, games and collectibles that’ll appeal to both avid and casual fans.'
