Animations, cult classics and new Japanese cinema take centre stage at this year’s Japanese Film Festival (JFF). Returning for 11 days at Shaw Lido, the 2026 edition coincides with SJ60, a celebration marking 60 years of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Japan. As part of the occasion, the festival lineup leans into that connection, featuring cross-cultural stories, co-productions and films that journey between the two countries.
Highlights include a spotlight on three films by Eric Khoo, who also joins JFF as a festival ambassador. Tatsumi pays homage to Gekiga master Yoshihiro Tatsumi, while Ramen Teh follows a young Japanese chef as he travels to Singapore in search of his family roots. Spirit World stars Catherine Deneuve as a pop star who heads to Japan for her final concert.
Can’t get enough of Japanese movies? You’re in luck. A special extended programme curated by Filmhouse and the Asian Film Archive adds even more cult favourites to the lineup. Catch three double-bill pairings by Kon Ichikawa and Yasuzō Masumura at Oldham Theatre, and enjoy limited screenings of Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s Cyber City Oedo 808 and Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust restored in 2K.
