Before there were cool boutiques and Instagrammable cafes, Kampong Gelam was a thriving Malay-Muslim quarter with deep royal roots and a rich trading history. Travel back in time to its colourful past at Malay Heritage Centre’s Kampong Gelam Festival, a two-day programme offering performances, workshops, panel discussions and guided tours and trails.
Throughout the weekend, the festival shines a light on the diverse Malay communities in Singapore, including the Arab, Banjar, Bawean, Batak, Bugis, Minang, Javanese and Orang Kallang communities. Chart the evolution of Nusantara music, learn the rhythms of the traditional rebana drums, and explore the intricate craft behind the kebaya. Also, for the first time, there will be a showcase dedicated to Batak Ulos, inviting visitors to uncover the artistry and traditions surrounding the handwoven textile.
The festival’s main attraction, however, is the ones taking over the stage. Spread out your tikar at Sultan Gate Park and enjoy a series of music and theatre acts, including an exclusive performance by the legendary singer J. Mizan and a retelling of the epic Ramayana tale through bangsawan, a form of traditional Malay opera.
