Forget pyramids and desert terrain. For its first-ever ancient Egypt-themed showcase at Lilytopia, Gardens by the Bay is swapping familiar dune landscapes for a rare look at the Northeast African country’s past. Travel back in time to a lush garden filled with blooming lilies and flowers that once grew along the famous Nile and around Egypt’s thousand-year-old temples. One of the main blooms on display is the sacred blue water lily. Also known as the Egyptian blue lotus, this striking flower symbolises rebirth, the sun and the afterlife, and was often buried alongside pharaohs. Through its vivid palette of lilies, the showcase also revives the colours and rich palette of ancient Egyptian art that has faded over time.
Presented alongside the floral display is A Glimpse of Egypt, an exclusive three-day exhibition by Egyptian painter Salwa Elhamamsy. Her dreamy, Impressionist-inspired oil paintings offer a contemporary interpretation of Egypt’s vast and breathtaking landscapes, with its iconic water lilies taking centre stage.
