For their 12th solo exhibition, Singapore-based duo Ripple Root – aka artists Liquan Liew and Estella Ng – turn to Malay director Hussein Haniff’s film, Chinta Kasih Sayang (“My Darling Love” in English), for inspiration. The 1965 movie is centred on a workaholic painter who puts his work above everything else, including his wife. Although his wife is indifferent to him and his profession, her beauty eventually catches the attention of another man, who tries to pursue her.
In this showcase, titled Postcards From My Darling Love, Liew and Ng recreate scenes from the black-and-white film by adding vibrant colour to familiar Singapore settings, which include Haw Par Villa, East Coast Park, Chinese Gardens, and the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station. The artworks presented explore the idea of love through framing and composition, alongside paintings on wood and nostalgic depictions of Singapore’s landscapes. FYI: all the pieces are up for sale, so you can take home your favourites.
