Books are most definitely not dead. In this world of digital overconsumption, brain rot, and AI, the printed word remains a highly relevant form of media – and that is what Steidl Book Culture. Magic on Paper aims to establish. Presented by DECK in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Singapore, the exhibition marks legendary German printer and publisher Gerhard Steidl’s first exhibition in Singapore after nearly a decade.
For this new exhibition, Steidl has assembled three powerhouse artists to showcase works that celebrate the beauty and craft of bookmaking. Immerse yourself in sculptural and mixed-media installations presented by Dayanita Singh (India), Theseus Chan (Singapore) and Jim Dine (USA) as they explore and respond to the printed art in different forms.
The exhibition is accompanied by several public programmes, including conversations with Gerhard Steidl himself and the artists, a photobook review session and classroom visits. Also, don’t miss your chance to stop by the Steidl Bookshop, a pop-up that lets visitors browse and buy limited edition releases and the latest titles published by Steidl.
