World Chess Day 2023

Time Out says

If you thought chess was boring, then you haven't been introduced to Aliwal Chess Club. This band of seven dudes are making this stuffy sport cool again, through casual chess hangs at Aliwal Street (hence the name) and cool collaborations with cafés and venues about town.

For the upcoming World Chess Day, they are throwing a big chess bash complete with fun chess activities that put a twist on the game, competitive games, art activities, retail booths, and live performances. And, true to their slogan 'Drink teh then we play', there'll be teh served at the event.

Swing by 48 Sultan Gate on July 29 to take part in all the 'rookus'. There'll be 11 stations in total: highlights include the Chessin' Zone which combines chess and ACC's "We're not really here for chess" card game, the Rapid Chess Board Setup Challenge where participants will compete to set up life-sized chess pieces in the quickest time possible, a craft zone at Little Kings & Queens for kids and parents to create wearable chess crowns, some zany Neon Chess, and a beginner's zone where novices can pick up chess basics in just 10 minutes.

Between rounds of chess, you can hang around the shophouse space with cups of teh in hand – or head to Trading Bishops, a crafters' market that will be showcasing the works and wares of local creatives. Or enjoy the Rhythm of the Knight, which includes groovy performances by emerging local acts (the line-up is still hush-hush).

World Chess Day 2023 by ACC is happening on July 29 from 4pm to 10pm, and is presented in collaboration with LalooLalang. Entry to the event is completely free (hooray!), but do remember to register when it opens on July 20, 8pm. Stay updated on ACC's Instagram page here
