Did you know that October 2 is World Batik Day? If you didn’t know, you do now. Celebrate the traditional textile art with Worn. Made. Shared, a joint effort between the Malay Heritage Centre and Galeri Tokokita. The week-long programme offers workshops, discussions and exhibitions that take a closer look at the intricate art form. There’s also a guided walk exploring Kampong Gelam and the history of batik businesses in the iconic precinct.
But more than cloth worn on special occasions, batik is a living heritage that carries generations of stories and artistic traditions. Get to know it better through Sari Seni, a series of public lectures co-organised with the NUS Department of Malay Studies. The programme features two conversations – The Art Worlds and Poetics and Politics of Art – with local artists Tumadi Patri and Ho Chee Lick on the speaker lineup. The two will also present a selection of their batik artwork at a special two-day showcase that closes out the festivities.
You can sign up for the lectures here.
