Sometimes, country music seems like the last mainstream frontier. Most commercial genres have been relentlessly co-opted into the pop charts but country tends to stay in its own lane, with only the odd curio or novelty hit crossing over. Kacey Musgraves is on a one-woman mission to change all that. Her latest album, the critically-lauded Golden Hour, is country at the core, but supplements that with excursions into house and disco, and a hint of autotune here and there. Furthermore, Musgraves tackles subjects like drugs and LBGTQIA rights – not topics generally associated with your average country star. She rightly cleaned up at February’s Grammy Awards and is sure to similarly win over the Sydney public when she steps on stage at the Enmore in May.
