Get suited, booted and kitted-out with fancy accessories, all in the one Paddington boutique
After initial success with an online accessory store and pop-up stores in Melbourne and Sydney, Oscar Perez and Theodore English have made their concept store Belancé a permanent retail space on William Street. It seems like a bold move setting up shop in Paddington at the moment, considering the numerous empty shopfronts in the area, but Perez told Time Out he wasn’t concerned about the multiple ‘for sale’ signs littering nearby Oxford Street.
“We weren’t worried at all,” says Perez. “We believe in what we do and we get really good reviews.” English adds: “I think [customers] can see there’s something here that they can’t find anywhere else.”
Belancé resembles a well apportioned closet where everything is for sale: watches are displayed in a jewellery case with dressers holding a selection of men's shoes, hats and wallets and a sparse rack of unisex clothing stands against the back wall.
And as we walk to the back of the store there are fitting rooms and a bespoke suit-fitting area. That section of the building is the Black Label, where a bespoke-fit suit starts at $800. Perez helps businessmen pick out a custom fit, style and fabric for a one-of-a-kind outfit, and the bonus of having the two stores in one place is that customers have a pick of leather accessories out front to go with their new suit.
One of our favourite pieces was a handy tote-cum-backpack from Swiss luggage company Qwstion, $189. Belancé also stocks Qwstion overnighter and weekend bags, wash kits and shoppers – ranging from $49 to $279 – as well as Baxter of California grooming kits, Eve&Kane loafers and Australian sunglasses brand Haze.
