With the ongoing Covid-19 coronavirus, online drinking parties – or on-nomi – are all the rage. If you’re starting to feel like you always see the same faces on your Zoom grid, it's time to take your on-nomi up a notch with a new service which brings real geisha to your online drinking parties.

Known as Meet Geisha, the service is based in Hakone Yumoto town in Kanagawa prefecture, the largest geisha hub outside Kyoto. Before the pandemic, Meet Geisha’s goal was helping tourists learn about the geisha culture through games and cultural activities. Now that Meet Geisha has gone online, you can chat with them from anywhere – you don’t even need to be in Japan.

Meet Geisha

You can request for an English-speaking geisha to fully appreciate the experience. Make a reservation through the website here.

Meet Geisha parties are available every Friday and Saturday from 8pm to 8.30pm JST. For just ¥1,000, you can invite up to five of your friends to join your Zoom party. All you need is a computer, tablet or phone with Zoom installed, a drink in your hand and some snacks to enjoy while talking with the geisha. If you’re missing Japan, this is one of the best ways to bring Japan into your living room.
