[Update, April 7] This article was updated to reflect the latest development with regard to the coronavirus situation in Tokyo.

Since Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike urged us all to refrain from unnecessary outings, Tokyo has become a ghost town – right in the middle of sakura season. With the temporary closure of venues and the cancellation of events due to the Covid-19 coronavirus, people have taken precautions and stayed inside. As the city prepares for PM Abe to declare a state of emergency, streets, buses and subway trains are just about empty. Here are a few photos of the most popular Tokyo destinations that now look deserted.
