Don’t believe it when people say that Bangkok doesn’t have enough green public spaces where you can exercise in peace and calm. While there’s no denying that the city is one huge glass and concrete jungle, the Thai capital can compete with other big metropolitan cities when it comes to greenery.

From north to south and west to east, Bangkok has public parks in all sizes where runners and fitness buffs can briefly escape the city’s hustle and bustle and go for a leisurely run or a peaceful stroll. Here are five parks that are worth a visit.

Lumphini Park

Located right in the heart of Bangkok, Lumphini Park is regarded as the lungs of the city center. Bangkok’s very first public park (it opened back in 1925) is where urbanites go for early-morning exercise or a late afternoon jog. The huge 574,600-square-meter park includes a manmade lake for swan boating, playgrounds, and open spaces for activities and live music performances.

Lumphini Park is pretty much accessible as it is situated within walking distance to BTS Sala Daeng, MRT Lumphini and MRT Silom stations and is connected to main neighborhoods like Sathorn and Siam.

Benjakitti Park

Satisfy your fitness obsession and love for photography at Benjakitti Park (sometimes spelled as Benchakitti), which is often referred to as Bangkok’s most picturesque park. Built in 1994, it recently went through a major renovation and an extension. The new 480,000-square-meter public space includes more facilities like walkways, running tracks and bicycle routes that stretch for over 10 kilometers.

To get there, you can take either the MRT or BTS to MRT Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, MRT Sukhumvit or BTS Asok. The Queen Sirikit Center also recently had a facelift and now has more exciting outlets to explore, which is a bonus if you haven’t been in Bangkok for quite some time.

Benchasiri Park

Another downtown green space, Benchasiri Park (don’t confuse it with Benjakitti Park), is more compact compared to other parks in the city (it only comprises 47,000 square meters). But it does come equipped with proper amenities for city-dwellers and visitors, such as a swimming pool, a playground and ample areas for outdoor sports.

But its location is what makes Benchasiri popular among both locals and tourists. The park is situated near upscale hotels like Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park and shopping malls like Terminal 21 and EmQuartier.

Wachirabenchathat Park

Don’t mind it's long name because Bangkokians just refer to it as Rod Fai Park (train park), and for a reason. Before it was a park, the 600,000-square-meter outdoor space was the State Railway of Thailand’s golf course.

One of Rod Fai Park’s coolest features is the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, where you can come and peer at beautiful butterflies and insects for free. We recommend going to the park on the weekend, so you can also pop into the popular Chatuchak Weekend Market and go crazy shopping for cheap and trendy fashion items and pretty souvenirs.

Rama IX National Park

Bangkok’s largest green space was constructed in 1987 to honor King Rama IX’s 60th birthday. The park covers 800,000 square meters and boasts wonderful features, from expansive botanical gardens and a lake to a gorgeous pavilion that acts as a museum dedicated to Rama IX and his achievements.

The national park is located on the outskirts of Prawet in the southern part of Bangkok, and getting there can be quite tricky if you don’t drive (it’s about a 20-minute taxi ride from BTS Udom Suk). Nevertheless, its eye-catching beauty and the interesting things to do on the way over, such as checking out the events at BITEC or shopping at Mega Bangna, make the trip worthwhile.
