5 Best Songkran cultural events you shouldn't miss

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) teams up with local sponsors to celebrate Songkran in a traditional way. There are cultural activities lined up at temples, parks, and malls, as well as attractions along the Chao Phraya River. TAT has also organized free shuttle boats along the river (between 9:00-22:00) so you can hop on and off to visit the participating attractions. Call 0 2225 7612 for complete info.

 

Asiatique The Riverfront

The Songkran Festival at Asiatique features the second annual Pa Kao Ma (traditional Thai loincloth) exhibition and cultural performances (don’t miss the super fun "sea boxing" show). Get on the ferris wheel for sky-high views of the city, shop for local products, and enjoy live concerts from local acts such as 60 Miles (13 Apr), Image (14 Apr) and Polycat (15 Apr).

Lhong 1919

Join the traditional bathing rites of Khlongsan’s highly respected Buddha Som Prathana from the Phichayayatikaram Woravihara Temple (Wat Phichaiya). Check out a four-meter-tall sand pagoda designed by artist Tan Kositpipat, enjoy a swing jazz performance led by Mew AF2, and visit the Ab Fab market to shop for food, clothing and accessories.

Lumpini Park

Phra Buddha Sihing, a sacred Buddha image, will be temporary relocated from the National Museum of Bangkok to a shrine at Lumpini Park so people can join in the traditional bathing ritual. Get up early—really early—to participate in a ritual where alms are offered to monks.
