Vuur earns spot among 101 best steak restaurants globally.

Time Out Cape Town got its first taste of the Vuur magic just over a year ago when the Stellenbosch-based restaurant hosted the Rare Tour alongside Los33 from Madrid, Spain.
To give you some context, the Rare Tour is a series of global culinary events showcasing some of the globe’s finest chefs from the World’s 101 Best Steak Restaurants ranking. You can read all about that experience here.
At the time of the Rare Tour, fire master Shaun Scrooby's Vuur ranked #88 globally. In 2025, it jumped up one place to #87. Fast forward to 2026 and Scrooby's brilliance has once again been recognised, only this time Vuur has shot up to the 52nd spot on the list. That's 'fire' (as the kids of today may say... it's also clearly a 'joke' made by this father of a 10-year-old)!
At its core, the Vuur experience is defined by cooking with fire in its purest form, with courses shaped by smoke, heat, and timing - and let me tell you, it's pretty damn tasty.
To go along with the ranking on the prestigious list, Vuur also took home an accolade from the recently-held Eat Out Awards.
Vuur was awarded 2 Stars at the Eat Out Awards, up from the 1 Star it received last year, marking a rare and accelerated rise for a restaurant that only opened a few years ago.
“This has been an extraordinary moment for the team,” Scrooby, owner and head chef of VUUR, said. “To be recognised on both a national and global platform is deeply meaningful.”
Born from Scrooby's deep love of fire cooking, Vuur opened its doors in April 2022 in a modest, converted stable in the Cape Winelands. Originally serving just one private table per day, Vuur became known for its intimacy and immersive experience.
As word spread, Scrooby sought a way to share the magic with more guests without losing the soul of the original concept.
Just across from the original site, Goose Island - a small island on the dam - caught his eye. Once the childhood playground of brothers Chris and Rob from Remhoogte Wine Estate, with their blessing and a nod to its legacy, Vuur Goose Island was born.
Vuur Goose Island's centrepiece is a shared Chef’s Table for 16 guests, an intimate yet communal experience of open-fire cooking, paired with exceptional wines from Remhoogte itself.
For those wanting to be even closer to the heat, the exclusive Chef’s Counter seats just two, offering front-row views of the flames and the food. This is where I sat for the Rare Tour, and let me tell you, it's an experience I won't soon forget... especially once you try the bone marrow sourdough roll with blueberry and buchu jam and Rooibos smoked honey butter.
Goodness me, I'm salivating again... off to grab a hot cross bun.
