The Chicago Air and Water show will look different this year—here's what's changing

A staple of Chicago's summer calendar, the Chicago Air and Water Show is shaping up to be yet another loud, electrifying weekend when it takes to the skies over Lake Michigan next month. The 2026 installation returns on Saturday, August 15 and Sunday, August 16. Fans seeking a sneak peek can also catch the full rehearsal on Friday, August 14. As the nation's largest free-admission air and water display, the beloved annual tradition draws over a million spectators to the city's waterfront every year.

The biggest news for this year’s festival is that the U.S. Navy Blue Angels will not be headlining due to a scheduling conflict with their national tour. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, who performed last year and traditionally alternate with the Blue Angels, will be back as the main headline act. But that doesn't mean the show will be any less thrilling. Flying six sleek F-16 Fighting Falcons, the elite Air Force squadron will demonstrate high-speed precision flying, tight formations and daring solo maneuvers.

Alongside the Thunderbirds, spectators can look forward to a full roster featuring top military and civilian talent including the U.S. Army Golden Knights, the legendary parachute team that's returning to perform precision freefall demonstrations. Also making an appearance will be Naval Special Warfare parachutists the U.S. Navy Leap Frogs and the Civilian Aviators, elite aerobatic pilots who will perform gravity-defying stunt routines over the open water.

Running from late morning through mid-afternoon, the event will showcase high-flying aviation excellence against one of the finest urban backdrops in the country.

While North Avenue Beach serves as the central hub for sound systems and focal maneuvers, great viewing spots stretch along the lakefront, including Oak Street Beach, Fullerton Beach, Navy Pier, and nearby parklands. And if you're looking to avoid the crowds, Friday's rehearsal day offers an almost identical lineup of practice runs with far more breathing room on the sand.
