Even though Chicago's a great place to be single, dating apps can start to feel like a chore after a while. You always encounter the same types of people, have to gauge whether they actually look like that in real life and then struggle through awkward chit-chat as you try to figure out what their "deal" is. We decided to take a break from the app monotony and set up two Chicagoans, Ashley and Joshua, on a blind date at the Moonlighter in Logan Square. Let’s see how it went.

THE DATE

First impression

Ashley: “I thought he was a bit casual for a first date, but he also seemed pretty laid-back and relaxed. It was obvious that he—okay, fine—we both have strong opinions.”

Joshua: “She arrived early, so I was a little thrown off. But I immediately noticed that Ashley is tall, attractive and has a great smile, so she made a good first impression.”

Chemistry

Ashley: “I got more of a friend vibe. He said the date was more of a joke he could tell his friends about, but he either seemed to have a good time or he is a decent actor.”

Joshua: “I think we had good chemistry, but I could be wrong. We discovered a shared love of food and traveling, and we both come from blended families.”

Awkward moment

Ashley: “He told me that he doesn’t like cats because you can see their buttholes all the time. The other patrons in the bar rallied around us when they found out it was a first date.”

Joshua: “People thought we were taking engagement photos and ended up sending us mescal shots—but I wouldn’t say that was awkward.”

The verdict

Ashley: ♥♥♥ (out of five) “The venue was nice, the conversation flowed seamlessly, and we surprisingly had a lot in common, but in the end, he’s not someone I’d go on a date with again.”

Joshua: ♥♥♥♥ (out of five) “Great conversation. There’s nothing worse than a conversation that doesn’t flow—it’s like pulling teeth. I think I’d see her again. We exchanged numbers.”
