This month, Gareth Emery, the highest ranking British DJ in DJ Mag’s 2010 Top 100 poll, will spin his fuse of trance, house and progressive at Vertigo. Emery’s sound is easily described as a simple but bona fide execution of those genres. That’s the beauty of Emery’s set; the steady beats can border on the hypnotic but don’t be surprised if it bursts out with an unexpected verve.
He had quite a prolific year in 2012 with his ‘Concrete Angel’ video being added to the MTV Dance playlist, not to mention the million of hits he received on YouTube in its first three weeks of release. Then he was chosen as a resident for Las Vegas’ Marquee, played at the enormous Ultra Music Festival, and took Garuda’s (his own record label) music to Space Miami, clocking up the air miles.
His producing skills, clear in anthems like ‘Exposure’ and ‘Metropolis’ alongside remixes for Armin van Buuren and Above and Beyond, are also a force to be reckoned with. This body of work kept him at the top of Beatport’s trance chart longer than any other artist back in 2009. Jay Chooi
