‘Kandang’ is the Malay adaptation of George Orwell’s seminal book ‘Animal Farm’. Adapted and translated by director Omar Ali and his father, the play follows a group of animals that managed to oust their irresponsible farmer only to find their hopes of a new life dashed when a new authoritarian regime of animals is established. While Orwell’s book was an allegorical tale of what took place during the Russian Revolution leading up to Stalin’s reign, this adaptation will be contextualised within our current political climate in Malaysia. Don’t worry, no actual animals are involved in the play.
