If you’re a proper Londoner, you’ll know that there’s nothing quite like spending a drizzly Saturday afternoon wandering around the Tate Modern in Bankside or Tate Britain where you can take in greats like Tracey Emin, Pablo Picasso, Lee Miller and JMW Turner.

This winter, the family of galleries is hosting a clutch of must-see exhibitions for the culturally curious. Better still, with Tate Trial membership – which gives you and a guest three months of unlimited entry to every exhibition with no need to book for just £26* – you’ll be able to take in all of these and more. Perfect for the post-Christmas period when you’re looking for stuff to do that doesn’t cost the earth or involve boozing.

Here are our picks of the best exhibitions – and don’t forget to sign up for a Tate Trial membership to make the most of them.

Theatre Picasso

Marking the 100th anniversary of The Three Dancers, one of Pablo Picasso’s most famous paintings, the Theatre Picasso exhibition is a timely twist on the Spanish painter and sculptor’s work. Running until April 12 and displaying over 45 pieces from Tate’s collection, plus loans from across Europe, the gallery space at Tate Modern will be transformed into a theatre of paintings, sculpture and textiles, some never-seen-before in the UK. The setting is a nod to Picasso’s fascination with performers and their transformative power, from bullfighters to entertainers, while the whole thing is staged by modern artist Wu Tsang and esteemed curator Enrique Fuenteblanca. It’s Picasso through fresh eyes.

Theatre Picasso is presented in The George Economou Gallery. In partnership with White & Case. Also supported by the Huo Family Foundation. With additional support from the Theatre Picasso Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate Americas Foundation and Tate Members.

Lee Miller

Running until February 15 at Tate Britain, this highly-anticipated exhibition is the most extensive retrospective of the trailblazing surrealist photographer’s work that has ever been staged. For those who need filling in: Miller was one of the most sought-after models of the 1920s before stepping behind the camera to become a leading figure in the avant-garden scenes of New York, Paris, London and Cairo (oh, the glamour!). No less than 250 vintage and modern prints will showcase her extraordinary career – including fashion and war photography, French surrealism and lesser-known images of Egypt – with plenty of surprises around the way.

Lee Miller is supported by the Lee Miller Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate International Council, Tate Patrons, Tate Photography Acquisitions Committee, Tate Americas Foundation and Tate Members. The media partner for Lee Miller is The Independent. Lee Miller is organised by Tate Britain in collaboration with the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Tracey Emin

Needing no introduction, Dame Tracey Emin is one of the most important contemporary artists of her generation, and this landmark exhibition at the Tate Modern is a chance to see her career-defining highlights alongside never-seen-before works. Spanning paintings, sculpture, textiles and installation, the showcase challenges what art can be, while her infamous My Bed will play a starring role. Catch it from February 21 to August 31.

Tracey Emin: A Second Life is presented in the Eyal Ofer Galleries. In partnership with Gucci. With additional support from the Tracey Emin Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate International Council, Tate Members and Tate Americas Foundation. The media partner for Tracey Emin is The Guardian.

Turner & Constable: Rivals & Originals

If you do just one thing this winter, make sure you swing by Tate Britain before April 12 to catch Turner & Constable: Rivals & Originals. It’s the definitive exhibition of its namesake artists to celebrate the 250th year of their births. The British greats, JMW Turner and John Constable, were also rivals with many critics of the time comparing their works – equally bold – to a clash of ‘fire and water’. We love a good showdown as much as the next, so we’re particularly excited about this exploration of the landscape painters’ intertwined lives and legacies – Turner with his blazing sunsets and Constable with his fresh portrayals of nature. Over 170s works on show will make this one to remember.

Turner and Constable is in partnership with LVMH. Supported by the Huo Family Foundation and James Bartos. With additional support from the Turner and Constable Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate Americas Foundation and Tate Members. The media partner is The Times and The Sunday Times.
