When the NFT underwent a transformation in 2007 it got more than just a name change. The new-look BFI added screening spaces, a bar, restaurant and archive centre. It also created an important addition to London’s art scene with a gallery that commissions and exhibits the work of artists dealing with the moving image. Video works by experimental filmmaker Michael Snow, as well as a collaborative show by visual artist Pierre Bismuth and director Michel Gondry, have both been hits. In addition to the main space, BFI has also created Mezzanine and Beyond – a changing, often themed, showcase of ephemera from the centre’s National Archive and National Library.
