Time Out says

These relatively early works (1967-1971) by the great abstract painter – created while living in the famous Chelsea Hotel in New York – helped pave the way for Bowling's influential poured pieces that would go on to make his name. They are fascinating, immense and beautiful works in their own right, taking inspiration from maps and cartography and created under the guidance of Jasper Johns and Larry Rivers.
