Sou Fujimoto's Serpentine Pavilion 2013

Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto has been handed the task of trying to trump last year's incredible Herzog & de Meuron/Ai Weiwei pavilion. At 41, Fujimoto is the youngest architect to take on the Serpentine's annual temporary commission and his latticed, steel pole construction is heavily inspired by nature and nearly transparent. It's a flexible space with a cafe inside, and is a must-see during its four month tenure in Hyde Park.

Absolutely not worth going out of your way for; the artist's video implies that you can clamber all over the structure and find your 'unique path', but the reality is that health and safety - in the guise of some seriously unfriendly staff - shout at you if you deviate at all from the small number of permitted routes. In the middle nestles a cafe... a Fortnum and Mason cafe, so forget about buying anything unless you've brought your platinum mastercard. Take your own picnic to a local climbing frame and you'll have far more fun.
