Sir Ernest Shackleton, the celebrated polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, moved to Sydenham with his Anglo-Irish family when he was ten. His father was a local GP, and their large family home on Westwood Hill is now commemorated with an English Heritage blue plaque.
