Clever dry ski slope on which beginners and improvers can perfect their technique before hitting the slopes for real.

Your hair's gently flying behind your ears, your thighs are burning and your backdrop is a mountain range, but this ain't no Alpine adventure. Chel-Ski is a new dry slope that offers skiing and snowboarding training just a ten-minute walk from Fulham Broadway station. But don't expect to be bundled up in salopettes as you hurtle into artificial snow drifts, because your lesson will take place on a giant astroturf treadmill. Sounds stressful? It is, but only for the first few minutes. Getting used to skiing on the spot (and seeing the panic on your own face in the massive two-way mirror) is a challenge, but once you're up and gliding smoothly while the carpet slides beneath your skis it's the ideal setting in which to gain confidence and perfect your technique.

Sessions at Chel-Ski are always with an instructor and it's as much for beginners as improvers – it must be far less scary to learn to snow plough on a bit of carpet than it is on an icy slope. The mirror really helps you to understand which of your limbs is the troublemaker, and you can take a break whenever you fancy rather than having to wait until you get back to the chairlift. Despite the apres-ski-themed café this is no substitute for the real thing, but for what is essentially a combination of a lesson and a workout it's great fun. As is seeing how confused people get when you tell them you went skiing on Monday morning.

I bought my partner a snowboarding session for his birthday and he loved it. The instructor was great at working with his level and didn't push him too hard. The slope is a white AstroTurf on a conveyor belt, so effectively you are staying still and the floor beneath you is moving. The session was a bit pricey (£40) for what works out as half an hour of slope time, but this is Chelsea!

Chel-Ski is the perfect place for every skier who is far from the mountains, be they total novices or very experienced. The site is conveniently located a 10 minute walk from Fulham Broadway tube and is easy to find. Once there, you sign a consent form and get your boots, and then you're ready to hit the white, astroturf slope!. There's no need for special ski equipment or clothing, just comfortable trousers and a sweater. The sessions last an hour, with ten minute slots and rest time in between- believe me this is needed if you are a novice, as your thighs will feel the burn! I absolutely loved my session- I went from clinging to the bar to stay upright, to feeling like I was actually in control and steering side to side. The slope itself is great, with no panful scratchiness or wetness if you fall over. The beauty of the rolling slope is being able to increase the speed, the slope gradient, or stop it all together is someone falls over (not that I did that...twice, of course!). There can be up to three people on the slope, of similar ability. I was with another beginner, and it was fun to see each other's progress, and even get a little competitive watching each other in the mirror. I would highly recommend Chel-Ski as something a bit different or for learning to ski prior to hitting the slopes. I felt much more confident and will definitely go back prior to trying the real thing!
