Consecrated in 1730, St George’s is a grand and disturbing Nicholas Hawksmoor church, with an offset, stepped spire that was inspired by Pliny the Elder’s account of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. Highlights include the mahogany reredos and sculptures of lions and unicorns clawing at the base of the steeple. The opening hours are erratic, but on Sundays, the church always remains open for visitors after the regular service. Do head down to the Undercroft for a compelling (and free) little exhibition on the building of the church above (as well as the Museum of Comedy) and check online for details of concerts.
