In the graveyard of St Pancras Old Church, you’ll find a tree which has roots that appear to be sprouting headstones. This isn’t the act of some supernatural power but rather the work of a young Thomas Hardy (the Victorian novelist), who had to move the headstones around the ash tree in a previous life working as an architect’s assistant. Obscure but true!
