Most central London rooftop bars rely on their views – put a price on them, even – neglecting their booze offering rather than reaching for new heights. Aqua Spirit has things the other way around. It serves quality cocktails that (almost) justify the price tag, but in a sky-high setting that’s a little lacklustre.
A few classic yet unpredictable concoctions are executed well – try the Clover Club for a refreshing gin-based drink - but order from the list of cocktails inspired by Japan (from £12.50) to sample this bar at its best. The Yuzuana Bellini is particularly original, and despite its banana flavour, is balanced by dry citrus (yuzu) saké.
The rooftop bar terraces are set awkwardly at the opposite end of the room to the lift entrance and can only be accessed by sashaying through the slick Japanese restaurant. It’s a shame the terrace doesn’t have the same chic international style as the dark, sexy interior bar, circular in shape and ideal for perching and people watching. A few late-night daters drift up to the inside bar for a nightcap – for example hot young couples, some older men with toy boys in tow – but don’t venture out to the rooftop at all.
Meanwhile, out on the terrace, City boys, Mayfair lawyers and a handful of tall blondes keep warm by chain-smoking around patio heaters. It’s decked in dark colours and works so well for a moody sunset, but by the time evening sets in, the terrace is poorly lit and uninviting from behind glass doors. Like us, you may choose to cosy up inside instead.

After going for a lovely meal at Browns Restaurant in Maddox St we didn't want the night to end. We headed to this beautiful looking bar. We were greeted nicely and headed to the bar on the balcony thats when it went down hill. We were ignored by 3 bar staff, who were walking back and forth behind the bar, it looked as if they were cherry picking who they wanted to serve and we stood no chance. I was surprised they didn't want our money. We left disappointed. After having the best service at Browns our night wasn't totally ruined. I think they should take lessons on customer service from Browns. Do not go to Aqua 0 star rating.
Really disappointed by this place - I'm a Londoner who loves a roof top
Bar (Boundary etc do a great job) but this place is an embarrassment: designed exclusively to rip off tourists. I don't object to paying hotel prices for fancy bars but I do object to the service and drinks being of a really poor quality (aperol spritz served with flat prosecco, only giant family sized bottles of water sold at the outside bar etc).
Wow must of gone to a different bar? been a couple of times, had drinks on the terrace or at the bar, just loved them! Not the sort of place that will have a happy hour, and guess what not cheap, and v popular, you need all of your eye catching skills, I'm guessing not many people have these haha!
March 2015 :
- The staff is offensive, abusing its position and obviously does not know basic courtesy & how to treat customers.
- Bar staff slow, so slow...
- Overpriced & Overrated, it does not worth it at all unless you want to show off or do not know any other place with a terrace.
I was frankly quite amazed by the misbehaviour from the staff in general.
Actually, the entrance is very appealing but the only way for upstairs to be ok is by re-educating/firing most of the staff or even the HR/manager in charge of the Aqua place.
I would have rated it 0.5 out of 10 but the minimum is one star so be it.
To sum up : Avoid.
lovely view but a rip of on the drinks, everywhere inside is so dark you cannot see anything, being charged 12.5% service on every drink you buy is outrageous, especially when I did not look at receipts till I got home. no waiter service to justify this and took forever to get served, on a Saturday afternoon, I would not like to be queuing in the evening, staff seemed to pick who to serve would not go back
Having a table out in the terracce on Friday at 6pm, we were expecting one more friend. The security did not allow my firend to join us as she had to wait to the queue due to the health and safety policy that does not allow more than 100 people in the terracce. Fair enough, H&S is accepted but the way that both the security and the manager were talking to me and moving their hands in front of my face was at least unprofessional. I did not expect such a rude and aggressive attitude for no reason. I am not going back again even though we were regular customers.
Terrible customer service, rude staff and expensive watered down cocktails. The view and great decor is the only plus to this venue.
Great place to have a glass of champagne and great sushi after a hard day shopping! Modern, chic and relaxed.
Not worth it. Too expensive and not very nice atmosphere. Go only if interested in a very very posh expensive evening
Nice venue but the staff were horrible and rude. They take ages to serve drinks, no bar food served. If you drink Bacardi, then you might aswell forget going there, they don't have any. JUST DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS PLACE........You will get treated really badly!
There is a dress code and we were not allowed in. Shitty behaviour of the guard and a disapointment for me and my guests. They shoukd publish such a thing in advance!
Decent looking venue but awful staff and bad atmosphere - they are so many better places to spend an evening in than there. I really can't believe how rude the staff are!
I usually love rooftop bars, but hated this place - check out my full review under the restaurant listing. Too much attitude, snobbery and dreadful service at inflated prices.
