Time Out says

4 out of 5 stars

The sizeable Cat & Mutton sits proudly at the helm of Hackney's Broadway Market, and has been welcoming its costermongers and consumers for 300 years. Over the centuries it has evolved into an establishment of two kinds: downstairs is a traditional pub, serving ales and roasts to thirtysomething locals. And up a spiral staircase is Pearl's cocktail lounge: a crepuscular bar with creative drinks, heavily draped windows and panoramic views of the market below. Both floors have comfy mismatched furniture, retro mirrors and old ceiling features made of tin.

Broadway Market never really stops being busy, even when the stalls aren’t set up, and the pub reflects this: it’s always got a welcome buzz and punters often overflow on to the tables outside. But it’s summer when the C&M really comes to life, as herds of Hackneyites descend on it like beasts on a watering hole from nearby London Fields. On those days, those who like a seat and would rather avoid the inevitable jostling would be advised to head elsewhere.

I had a birthday celebration here around christmas time last year. We reserved a table and were throughly looked after. being christmas it was fairly busy and hectic but the bar staff made us feel really welcome and continued serve with a smile. Since last year the group of about 20 of us have been back several times. Although busy and tables are hard to come by this place is also great in the summers for standing on Broadway market watching the world go by with a glass of wine, beer or a cocktail.

A true Broadway Market gem. Fun and spacious pub with tasty food and great vibes to satisfy any weekend (or weekday) craving for a fun, no fuss night drinking beers (or spirits) listening to good music, and chilling out. Also has a cool area outside, which closes disappointingly early however. The bouncers are also rude and pushy if you stand outside for a bit longer than they would like you to. Still, there's oodles of fun to be had indoors on either of its two floors.

One of my favourite local Hackney establishments. Even though their beet selection could be much better, the atmosphere here is always relaxed and enjoyable. Perfect place to enjoy a drink on a Saturday afternoon whilst observing the marketgoers on Broadway Market.

Feel good pub for all, this place is absolutely divine. With two floors of seating the fun goes on and on. The top floor is my favourite, it has a few sets of sofas making a day of lazy drinking feel like an easy going day spent in someone’s living room. It’s sort of a quintessential British pub with a trendy east London twist. The food is what I’d call comfort food - greasy, meaty, and great to the last bite (bear in mind I’m from South Carolina where everything is covered in butter or fried.) Definitely check it out if you’re in the Broadway Market area and looking for a nice pub.

Nice old school east London pub, great for sitting outside in the summer. Inside is a little lack lustre. Good bloody Mary's, and a good selection of beers. Staff are friendly, draws in an eclectic mix of hipsters and old fashioned east-Enders.

Hello Sunday Roast!

Book a table, grab a pint and chill out in the sun outside while you wait for your generous portions to arrive. I come here for the pork belly. It comes in thick slices and giant cracklings that are satisfyingly crunchy! Mmmm

Aside from roast, their everyday menu is also very tasty and just a really cool place to hang out on weekends when you get tired of laying in the sun in London Fields.

One of the trendiest hang outs in East London. When I say trendy I mean the ripped jeans, puppy owning, creative youngsters of East London. This is where we hang on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon for a casual drink with friends. Whether it is standing outside on the street drinking a G&T or at a table in the sunshine usually with randoms that then become your friends or next business partner, the cat and mutton has a great vibe, good service and chilled environment.

It is in a great location on Broadway. Whether you want to stroll through the street markets (on a Saturday only), laze in London fields eating Franca Manca pizza or visit some of the amazing restaurants nearby...The "cat" as the locals call it, is the best place to stop by for drinks and chill out with friends.

WARNING!  The pub has now parted company with the chef from Licky Chops.  I went there expecting the amazing varied plates I had last time and had to settle for a menu that belonged in JD Wetherspoons - at four times the price!
