Muswell Hill couples, families and groups of friends regularly pack this large gastropub. Oddly, the Clissold doesn’t have much competition locally, which might explain its high prices.
On sunny days, the large, pretty terrace to the side feels like an escape to a Mediterranean isle (not only because of the Spanish cured meats, king prawns and other tapas-style dishes on the specials board). Tables under the large sheltered canopy introduce a boardwalk atmosphere. Inside, choose from the darker, cosier front bar (where Sambrook’s Wandle Ale is among the cask beers) or the larger modern and airy back room.
The evening menu combines gastropub classics, such as 28-day-aged beef and chips cooked in dripping, with Mediterranean dishes such as Catalan fish stew. At Sunday lunchtimes, the emphasis is on roasts, which come with a delicate portion of roast potatoes, root-vegetable mash and greens. Beef was medium-rare as requested; slightly undercooked tatties were the only disappointment. Pasta from the children’s menu had fresh herby flavour. Star of the puddings was a perfect honey and vanilla panna cotta with a zingy passionfruit coulis.
The Kinks played their first gig here, and a room is dedicated to the band.
With our ‘Food Comes First’ philosophy joined with our fantastic Head Chef Reuben Gould & team there is little room for disappointment. The signature Short Rib is a hit along with our fish dishes sourced from local suppliers, not forgetting our vegan dish of the day!
Recover with our legendary Sunday Roasts combined with a Bloody Mary from our drinks list.
From weddings to private dinners, we aim for our customers to leave with a smile on their face and the worry of planning taken away! A recent face lift through the Clissold has made it all the more beautiful for your bespoke dining experience.

Great venue for either a drink , dinner or for private functions. Lovely garden full of fairy lights! Magical gem hidding in Muswell Hill/East Finchley area
Although the high prices, the atmosphere is amazing, specially in the summer days and nights, when the terrace is busy and with lights. A nice place to watch football matches. Friendly staff. Perfect for sunday lunch!
Must agree with the number of reviews that say this is overpriced and also over confident on what it delivers. The menu is limited and some dishes do not work. The Salmon teriyaki with nicoise salad must have been what Erik Erikson based his findings on when he termed the phrase 'identity crisis' The music piping in was too loud and too inappropriate, a mix of big band and swing, it complimented neither ambience, nor ear drum Its average at best
Consistently disappointing. The Clissold Arms should have all the right ingredients for a great night out, but always seems to fall short. Tried now on 4 separate occasions! Without doubt it's a great location and atmosphere, but my advice would be to pop in for a drink and eat up the road in the Bald Faced Stag. The food is mediocre at best, despite a tempting menu. But quality of food and prices charged sadly do not match in any way. Twice we've had to send food back.... In 4 visits that's not a great average.
Went for breakfast on a Saturday morning with massive signs outside saying breakfast until 12, we walked towards a table-(all empty) and was told in a care less fashion no breakfast today they had a big event in the evenng so the chef cancelled breakfast-asked for the manager and he was less interested than the first waitress we spoke to-management clearly full of their self importance and don't give a stuff about their customers-i eat out almost every morning with friends so this has cost them many thousands in my revenue alone-DONT WASTE YOUR TIME-theres much better places in east finchley and muswell hill who care about their clients!
Do not go there, we went there today for first time, despite booked it in advance, they could not find the booking, our orders were not taken for an half an hour and foods did not arrive for further 45 min whilst it says 2 for 1 for coctails they still charged us full amount food are rubbish, tasteless, smell weird made a complaint in writing via email however not surprisngly nobody responded horrible place
Overpriced and not as good as it thinks it is. Rather mean portion sizes make you wonder if there's a cost cutting drive on in the kitchen - it may be the accountant rather than the chef has the most influence, which is bad news. Had the steak which was OK, no more. But with Hawksmoor (and others) on the scene, charging this much for pretty average meat doesn't cut it. Overall, it just seems a bit complacent, lazy and greedy. Probably because it has got a captive local market it doesn't feel it needs to raise its game. The Eagle and the Peasant are just two examples of places which do it much, much better and are only a 15 minute cab away. To improve it needs a lot more generosity, and a bit more adventure.
The Clissold Arms managed by MIchael Collins did our late Irish Mother proud!! Providing a first class Buffet style meal for the Wake following her funeral in June 2011. The Venu - tent style extension with a courtyard garden, the service, and most importantly the food was tip top and we will be back for more.....
