With Greenwich’s Meantime Brewery becoming a global colossus beloved of Waitrose customers up and down the land, good on the Hare & Billet for offering some craft beer alternatives to the residents of Blackheath and SE10. Always a decent local boozer, the H&B’s crafty reinvention has made it something quite special.
Small London breweries are well represented on the pumps, which might feature Brockley Brewery’s Red Ale; there are kegs from the likes of Wales’s Tiny Rebel and a good bottled selection from Beavertown, Kernel, Partizan, Weird Beard, plus some US visitors such as Evil Twin and Brooklyn. In summer, take your ale on to the heath, and it’s like the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and noughties never happened.

Although the accoustics sometimes make it hard to hear what people are saying, this is a great local pub, with a really good range of beers and wines, bar food and a restaurant and you can bring your dog! Lovely for summer evenings when you can take your drinks outside (plastic glasses) and sit on the heath by the pond.
Proper local with great beers. I have spent many perfect summer afternoons sitting on the heath by the pond
A huge selection of beer and an impressively lengthy wine list. It's dog-friendly and with such friendly staff there are tails wagging everywhere! Such a welcoming atmosphere, topped off by a chef and menu that's absolutely outstanding. Nowhere else sums up Blackheath better.
The Hare & Billet is a great local pub - too far from the station to attract crowds, but always buzzing. There is a carefully chosen selection of craft lagers and ciders, and a changing seasonal menu. One to go to with your date, your mates and your nan - it is good enough for any purpose!
Blackheath has myriad different pubs from the rough and ready O'Neills to the proper Pub's Pub the Dacre Arms and the middle-of-the-road Railway, Crown and Princess of Wales. It doesn't have a "good food" pub like many places around London it does now. It also has (at least) 16 different beers/lagers/ciders on tap that change frequently - very frequently. On a recent visit all 8 pumps had changed! Duck with puy lentils that I had tonight was excellent. The food comes at a premium but the food is GOOD and Blackheath has, whether you like it or not, the clientele-base that want this. I will happily pay for quality food and wide-ranging booze. It's now by streets in my opinion the best pub in Blackheath.. I'm struggling to think of a better pub for food and booze in ruddy south London! As for the atmosphere "going" - all bar one of the tables I could see was taken this evening - on a Monday night! Keep up the good work.
I went recently to the Hare & Billet, since it has been refurbished and thought it was excellent. A friendly greeting, interesting menu and super range of drinks. I will definitely be returning & sampling some more of the yummy food.
