The Fat Walrus

The Fat Walrus is fairly new (it opened in early 2016) to the New Cross pub scene. Its booths and bar stool seating (built by the house staff) undoubtedly attract numerous students, especially given its proximity to Goldsmiths University.

The food menu features American style barbecue dishes, such as flame grilled burgers – of the beef, chicken and veggie varieties – all of which are served with fries. An eight-ounce steak with spicy harissa and fries is also available, as well as grilled king prawns with paella for those fond of seafood.

Visitors with a sweet tooth can tuck into ice cream or a variety of messes, which involve whipped cream and ice cream muddled together with chunks of jam doughnut, banana and toffee or brownies, Oreos and Maltesers.

This is a great local pub in New Cross with a secret bar garden/outdoor area at the back. I went here for a quick drink and ended up staying for meal. This usual pub grub of burgers and hot dogs however you have mix and match toppings and sausages creating your own bespoke meal. Really friendly bar staff who know their beer helping me to decide which Pale Ale I would like most. I will definitely be popping back up the road to The Fat Walrus sometime soon!

My husband and I ate here for lunch today and it was good not spectacular. I got the prawn and avo salad (dressing on the side) and he got the sloppy joe (subbed chips for sweet potato fries). The pub is also dog-friendly so that was great as we brought our chi. My salad was fine: though three large prawns for £11 is a bit steep! The prawns were seasoned, the grilled lemon was a nice touch, and the salad was tasty, but I don’t know the prawns tasted too briney to me (odd I know). My hubs said his sloppy joe was good on the first bite but was overall a touch too salty. The sweet potato fries were ample but too bland.

The waitress we had though was really nice and it’s a chill, cool pub atmosphere. Lots of beers and two ciders (Symonds and Old Rosie’s) on tap.

I would have ordered the pumpkin and white bean chili but sadly it’s only served with white rice.

Thank the lord for a reasonably priced, decent looking pub in New Cross! Whilst I love the various dives that the area has to offer, sometimes you just need somewhere to take your mum or just chill out on a Sunday afternoon, you know?

The wine, beer and cocktail offerings are awesome (they mix up a wickedly spicy Bloody Mary) and very good value for the offering. I haven't had a chance to sample much of the food yet, however what I have tried comes in decent portions, arrives quickly and is seriously tasty!

The pub looks cool on the inside and whilst there isn't much seating inside, there is a huge, heated and covered seating out back and another seating area out front, which is prefect for packed out Friday and Saturday. Definitely highly recommended.

A modern twist on traditional pub food! Everything is delicious and cooked to perfection. Also they have a pub puppy! What more could you want!!

My favourite pub in New Cross me and my boyfriend go mostly at weekends, it has a really quirky feel to it - the food and drinks are brilliant, they have huge portions for a really reasonable price. And they staff are very friendly - highly recommend The Fat Walrus to anyone. ( I love the name too!)

Baloo, burgers & beer!! I love this place... the Friday night music is pretty cool too :)

Best pub in London - great landlord, friendly staff, brilliant range of beers and other drinks, and an ace puppy!

With its fun yet still relaxed atmosphere and huge garden and delicious food it's a great venue

My favourite local! The staff are warm and friendly, no hipster vibes here, and the roasts are out of this world. Open less than a year, the guys here have done an amazing job.

Awesome staff, good beer, tasty food and a pub dog. And 100 yards from my flat.

The staff care so much which makes for an amazing atmosphere and let's not forget the incredible popcorn chicken and burgers are mouthwatering.
