The Harlequin near perfectly conforms to the idea of the quintessential English pub. Tucked away behind Sadler's Wells (and conveniently close to our office) it's a wood-panelled, log fire sort of a place, that always manages to look clean and ship shape. The plush green-tiled frontage hints to the class of the establishment. I'm so enamoured with the inside that I've never tried the garden, but the interior is so small that it's often a necessity. If you're aiming for a seat, get there for 5pm or just before!

Angel, Islington is dotted with pubs that always seem to be busy during the week, no matter what time of day it is.

The Harlequin- tucked away on a quiet residential street behind Sadler's Wells- is different: get there before 5 and it's lovely and quiet.

But it's very small, so when the after-work crowd does hit, it gets very busy, very quickly.

Nothing fancy here- just a traditional, cosy, charming pub with a roaring fire in winter.

On offer is a good selection of beer and wine and the only food is a British cheeseboard with oatcakes- but they're happy to cater for parties.

There is a small beer garden out the back which is the only outside space because, thanks to a grumpy neighbour's consistent complaining, no more drinking out front on the pavement is allowed.

The Harlequin is closed on the weekend so make the most of it during the week- ideally before 5!

Great little pub near Saddler's Wells. Sometimes it feels like the magic of the theatre carries on inside. There seems to be always room inside for more people despite its tiny dimensions, often giving it a feel of a party.
