Please note, The Lion has now closed and will reopen as The Red Lion under new ownership. Time Out Food & Drink Editors, January 2017.

A mix of vintage furniture, dimmed lighting and candles make for a cosy atmosphere at this Stoke Newington boozer. Real ales on tap are London Pride, Deuchars IPA and Harvey's Sussex Best, while the lengthy cocktail list eschews the classics for more unusual concoctions. A bison martini mixes Zubrowka bison grass vodka with smooth crème de pêche and apple juice, while the fruity mango daiquiri is not short of a strong rum shot. There's a small menu that offers Argentinean-style barbecued food such as chivito, an Argentinean steak sandwich.

This is my kind of bar: big sofas, candles, classic tunes, decent beer and snacks.  They have replaced the buy-in pizza from across the road with an outside BBQ - I miss the pizza, it worked well with the atmosphere but the burgers are good if you're in the mood for one.  The upstairs often opens its doors for mid-week comedy which is usually fun but quiet.  Overall, The Lion is the kind of place you go thinking you're going for a quiet beer but end up having a drink fueled night with a random group at the bar.  My only criticism is the seasonal sport on the big screen which transforms this pub into a regular lad-fest.

I was walking on Chruch street in Stoke Newington on a sunny day. Suddenly, the quest for a beer garden overtook me. And there it was, The Lion. Not only does the beer garden have lovely fairy lights and loads of sun light, it also has a full burger BBQ kitchen! The smell was almost unbearable in my ever-hungry state.

The pub also seems to be the home to a life drawing class every Wednesday and show main sports games on its giant screen in the main room. The general decor is pretty traditional in the best possible way. #TOTastemaker
