The Lion

This pub and kitchen in Houndsditch opened in September 2016 but it's been dressed up to look like it's been there for years. That means Chesterfield banquettes, promotional mirrors from yesteryear and Victorian imagery on the walls. But don't worry, there's plenty of exposed lighting and brickwork, too.

Food options range from barbecue wings, salt and pepper squid and mezze boards to burgers, sandwiches, subs, truffled mac n cheese and a range of hand-stretched, stone-baked pizzas. Drinks wise it's wines from worlds old and new, recognisable cocktails and real ale, on draught and by the bottle.

Keep an eye out for deals on both booze and food.

If you are planning to pop out for a few drinks in EC3A make sure you swing by The Lion. It’s a really lovely pub, good food and nice selection of booze. They have great prosecco offers too : ) Owned by a lovely couple who love their pub and it shows! It’s clean and filled with nick nacks donned on the wall. I liked it! Should I be in the city again of an evening,I will head for The Lion for a quickie!

Met up with the girls here last Friday and had a really good time. First off, my friend was able to book a table for drinks so it was nice to have a seat in a busy bar on a Friday night. Service was also very good as we were looked after a cute waiter who made sure we had everything we needed. A DJ, nice atmosphere and half-price prosecco all night was a total bonus. All in all a pleasant surprise and makes a nice change from the big cattle-market chain bars in the area.

In my humble opinion, The Lion, Houndsditch is a small but cosy and charming pub located under the soaring skyscrapers of the City.

Only a few minutes walk away from Aldgate East tube station, expect comforting British food in a decor made to look like somewhere from the Victorian age with its saloon-style frosted glass, dark mahogany wooden furniture and posters recalling the former glory of the old world.

The buffalo chicken comes recommended but if I were you, I’d go for the steak with a side of chips and garlic butter. It's decent value, done the way I liked it and portions are reasonable. The scotch egg is done well oo but I'd avoid the calamari.

It’s busiest times are Wednesday-Friday night so avoid those times if you want it at it's quietest.

The drinks menu is constantly evolving so after every quarter, expect to see a longer list of cocktails or at least a brand new list. If beer is more you thing (this is a more a pub than a bar if truth be told), the craft ales are also in on the ever-changing act.

The Lion, Houndsditch is, ultimately a cosy and charming boozer in the heart of the City. If you’re lucky to bag yourself a table in one of the corners, then a relaxing and cosy evening is in store for you.

Great little spot to catch up around cocktails or to come for business lunch. my new local!

Great addition to the Hounsditch area. Always felt it was a bit stuffy around the Gherkin with all the city boys and power suits but now there's somewhere much more casual to enjoy good food and a great atmosphere. Certainly wipes the floor with other bars nearby.
