Colton Arms

Far enough from the beaten track to attract only the occasional irregular, the delightful Colton Arms is warming in winter (trusty fireplace) and convivial in summer (‘Biergarten’ out back).

At some point in the dim and distant, somebody seems to have tried to build a tourist trade by naming the toilets ‘Sires’ and ‘Wenches’ and hanging up all manner of tankards and horse brasses, not to mention a royal crest of unknown European heritage, but visits by the Osaka branch of the Sharp’s Doom Bar Appreciation Society are rare.

A sturdy cash till, guarded by a portrait of a late, lamented mastiff, registers a pre-decimal ring-up; a clock may chime while you order. If this place were a little more TARDIS-shaped (it does its best), you’d swear you’d walked into an episode of Doctor Who.

Over the last year or so I've become a regular in here. There's no doubt it's old-fashioned, but that's the point. The food menu is no more, but the beer is spot on and the prices are not unreasonable for where it is. The beer garden is small but visually stunning in the height of Summer thanks to the care taken over it. They don't take cards - although the landlord is thinking about it - so bring cash or be stung by the machine in the convenience shop 100 yards away. The fact the Time Out reviewer gave it 2 stars proves something powerful: Time Out staff are only interested in "younger" and "trendier" bars. They have no understanding of how good this is for most people who like proper pubs. I'm in my 30s, and I love this place. If you want to spend your evening snorting coke and listening to loud music, go elsewhere. The Curtain's Up round the corner will probably have you. If though you like a quiet pub with friendly staff and local regulars who have lived in the area for decades, serving quality booze at a not-unfair price, this place is perfect.

This pub is a personal favourite. It's worth a walk for a good pint, and this place warrants a walk.

One of the best pub's i've been too in the world. yes the world. The atmosphere, staff, draft list are all amazing. I'll mention the staff again, great landlords through and through. I don't know what these time out people are on about, the taste of the people clearly differs from theirs.

Great beer

Only decent pub in West London, if not the capital. All the better for not having any tossers from Time Out in there, who clearly have no idea what a good pub is, and probably think the curtains up round the corner is brilliant. Long live the local.

Under new ownership, this pub is a winner. The food will surpass all expectations of a good pub, try out the truffle ravioli or the cheese soufflé. Reminds me of a new york speak easy. Highly recommended!

2/5 stars only!!! Verrrry clever, huh! As a foreigner (=stupid tourist) I've visited about 100-150 pubs in London and this place is one of the best, right at this moment the best of them. Beer was perfect, staff like your old friends, regulars inquisitive and atmosphere homelike. What else... yes: salad with the toast was so delectable you feel you're not in Britain. Was this a screwup then?
