Sadly the new film is not a Smiths biopic. Instead, ‘Shoplifters of the World Unite’ will be set in America on the day in 1987 when Morrissey announced that the band was breaking up. The drama will follow a sensitive teenage boy, who, heartbroken by the news, takes a gun into a radio station and holds the DJ hostage, demanding he play nothing but The Smiths all night.

'Shoplifters of the World Unite' will be directed by Stephen Kijak ('Scott Walker: 30 Century Man') and star 'Magic Mike' actor Joe Manganiello as the DJ. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Sasha Lane, the breakout star of Andrea Arnold’s new drama ‘American Honey’ (out here on October 14) has also been cast in the film. The 20-year-old was studying psychology and working as a waitress in Texas when Arnold spotted her on a beach in 2015 – drawn to her tattoos and 'free spirit'.

Even though ‘Shoplifters of the World Unite’ isn't directly a film about The Smiths, we're hoping for a little appearance by Morrissey as a character in the movie, and casting-wise, we'd love to see Matt Smith in the role.
