After much umm-ing and ahh-ing (and a lot of talk about Boris Johnson's grand plans for an airport in the Thames Estuary, aka 'Boris Island'), the government has given the Heathrow expansion the green light. The Department of Transport has just approved plans to build a third runway at Heathrow, rejecting proposals to expand an existing runway at Heathrow or to build a second runway at Gatwick.
But it's not just Boris Johnson who's disappointed with the decision. In anticipation of the announcement, climate change activists have been protesting outside Parliament this morning. The demonstration was organised by campaign groups Plane Stupid and Reclaim the Power, who gathered 40 activists together to create a mock runway outside Parliament.
Sadiq Khan said it was 'the wrong decision for London and the whole of Britain'. He added: 'I will continue to challenge this decision and I am exploring how I can best be involved in any legal process over the coming months'.
