Artful lodgers: there's a new affordable hotel for artists opening in Wood Green

Wood Green may not be an area you’d immediately associate with the world’s cultural elite, but that’s about to change when Green Rooms arts hotel opens this week. Taking over a 1920s art deco building near the Piccadilly line station, it has 26 stylish rooms with prices starting at £15 a night for a dorm bed, £45 for a double or £80 for a studio apartment. If that sounds wildly cheap, that’s the point. The not-for-profit organisation is hoping that its affordable prices will attract artists, actors, musicians and other visiting creative types.

They’ve teamed up with cultural powerhouses like Somerset House, The Royal Court and The British Council, who’ll be encouraging their artists to stay at the hotel when they’re in town and use the spaces for rehearsals. Non-arty types are also welcome and they’ll be putting on lots of events, performances, exhibitions, gigs and restaurant residencies for those who fancy a cultural break up north.
