Hackney Empire is hosting a 'donation-powered' concert

The much-loved Hackney Empire is one of the last standing old East End music halls, but sadly the venue will lose 30 percent of its council grant next year, as Hackney Council has been forced to make cuts. But the folks behind the theatre aren't giving up without a fight. They've come up with a solution to make up for the shortfall - a 'donation-powered' concert, where tickets would be sold for a minimum donation but audience members would have to keep the music going by donating via email, Twitter or text during the concert. Y'know, like when you have to keep chucking coins in the metre to keep your electricity on, except way less depressing. The concert is pencilled in for mid-2016 and the organisers hope to get east London-born artists involved including Labrinth, Dizzee Rascal and Professor Green.
