Oh Westway, you sexy beach: National Trust brings the seaside to west London

The iconic flyover is having its undercarriage made over to ensure its beach body ready for summer. Now those are words we never thought we'd hear ourselves uttering, but thanks to the National Trust the area under the Westway in Acklam Village is being transformed into a sandy seaside hang-out.

This weekend (Jun 26-28) the Trust is laying on loads of family-friendly fun, a beach party, a market and setting up a bar. There'll be windbreakers, beach huts, deck chairs, carousels, cabaret and end-of-the-pier attractions.

The Westway Beach is being set up to celebrate 50 years of the Neptune Coastline Campaign, which cares for 775 miles of British coastline. Join NT Coastal Rangers from 4-7pm on Friday to find out what sort of work they do, or go on Saturday and Sunday to browse the market (open 11am-6pm) and pop into Portobello Pop-Up Cinema to see some sea-themed screenings. Buckets and spades at the ready, people!
