Last month, we asked loads of our favourite actors to send us a list of their ten most beloved films for a poll we were putting together: a new list of the 100 Best Movies of All Time. The results were surprising, enlightening, challenging and in some cases just plain weird – so we’ve pulled a few of the choicest top tens out for a closer look.

Stephen Merchant may be one of this country’s best-loved comedians, from co-writing ‘The Office’ and ‘Extras’ to appearing in everything from ‘Hot Fuzz’ to ‘I Give it a Year’ (and yes, he was in ‘Movie 43’ as well, but we’ll let that one slide). Merchant’s movie choices reflect his funnyman image – up to a point. Yes, there are a few comedies, most of them dark, satirical affairs like ‘The Apartment’, ‘After Hours’ and ‘Crimes and Misdemeanours’. But there’s plenty of drama in there too, from swooning French theatre tale ‘Les Enfants du Paradis’ to powerful American thriller ‘Klute’ to his number one pick, the devastating Taiwanese anti-romance ‘In the Mood for Love’. Based on this terrific list, we’d love to see what Merchant could do with a straight-up drama. How about it, Steve?

3. Short Cuts

4. Klute
