  1. Looking for a last-minute option?

Forgot to grab a ticket to that now-sold-out party that loads of your mates are going to? Of course you did. Fear not, however, as there are great NYE bashes that you can simply rock up to on the night – depending on how many people get there before you, of course.

The Nightbus to Catford NYE Special at south-east London pub the New Cross Inn is brimming with soul, funk, reggae, ska and rare groove, spun by Reading collective and party crew Bare Groove. DSKO at Brixton venue Effra Social also homes in on the funky theme, focusing – as you might have guessed by the title – on all things disco. It’s free and you don’t have to book.

In east London, NYE at Pub on the Park, on the edge of London Fields, boasts free entry, two rooms full of party jams, fireworks at midnight (which you don’t have to pay a tenner for, Boris) and prizes: it’s a popular pub, so arrive nice and early. Dom Servini v Wrongtom at Brick Lane staple the Big Chill Bar features two DJs from two top record labels (Wah Wah 45s and Tru Thoughts, respectively) going back-to-back behind the decks on what promises to be an eclectic and utterly danceable musical journey. Once again, just make sure you arrive early.

  2. Looking for a cheap choice?

Let’s be honest, New Year’s Eve tends to cost a bloody fortune, so here are some wallet-friendly options to help soften the blow. Snap, Crackle & Pop: Hitsville at Broadway Market bar Stories is free entry and offers disco and northern soul, while the speakeasy-themed Prohibition Party in the basement of Clerkenwell bar The Well is also free entry, featuring a DJ, a 1920s dress-up theme and plenty of posh liquor, which probably hasn’t been brewed in bathtubs. Lastly, you can groove until 4am at east London party pub Star of Bethnal Green to an up-tempo selection of house cuts and funky jams for just £6.

  3. Fancy dressing up?

Costumes and cabaret meet sword-swallowing and sexiness at the Dark Circus Party, held at the Grand Hall on Euston Road. The dress code is ‘vintage, glamour and fantasy’ so think corsets, top hats or whatever makes you feel furtive and filthy.

More hip decadence can be found at the Paradise New Year’s Eve Masked Ball at west London party pub Paradise by Way of Kensal Green, or you can lose yourself in immersive ’40s wartime vibes at the Blitz Party NYE at Great Suffolk Street Warehouse. Fast forward to the ’50s, at the Tarantino Party at Shoreditch’s Blues Kitchen and boogie to retro film soundtracks, drink a five dollar shake and maybe even dance with a gimp.

  4. Dying to get on the dancefloor?

For dedicated clubbers, NYE is a feast of top parties and world-class DJs. Clerkenwell dance cavern Fabric is hosting another outstanding New Year’s party, welcoming in 2015 in superbly sweaty style. Seth Troxler, Scuba, Jackmaster and many more will be rinsing out house, bass, disco and techno until 9am.

More deep dancefloor delights can be found at Shoreditch venue XOYO, where refined house maestros Shadow Child and Karma Kid will be sonically steering the ship. Also spinning infectious dancefloor-fillers are rising disco dude Kiwi and out-and-out banging beats duo Mak & Pasteman.

Over at the Coronet in Elephant & Castle, Found Presents: Analog NYE offers a whopping six rooms of full-on four-four bliss, including German techno producer Anja Schneider, booty house-loving funk duo Catz ’N Dogz and party-starters The Menendez Brothers.

  5. Want to bop to pop and rock?

Libertines man Carl Barât and his new grungy band The Jackals play indie-blues at the Amersham Arms’s This Feeling party, joined by a DJ set from psyche indie act The Horrors.

If you like your cool tunes with a dash of cheese, Club De Fromage v Old School Indie at O2 Islington Academy offers total pop bliss. Still too cool? Head to I Love the ’80s v I Love the ’90s at The Garage and wallow in delicious Britpop, R&B, disco and power ballads.

  6. Love live music?

Want to hear music made by actual, proper instruments this NYE? Get your guitar fix at Camden’s Lock Tavern NYE Party with indie pop troupe Hatcham Social and garage punkers Abjects taking to their teeny-tiny stage. Or channel your inner Ziggy Stardust at the Shacklewell Arms’s Bowie Odyssey, celebrating the Thin White Duke with a live set from tribute band The Spiders From Mars and DJs spinning all his hits.

Think you could do better? Prove it at popular singalong club night Friday I’m in Love, at central London pub the Prince of Wales Feathers, where you can belt out your favourite indie and pop tracks backed by a full live band. Surely a lot more fun than watching Jools Holland’s ‘Hootenanny’, at any rate?

  7. Feeling funky?

Two heavyweight genres engage in a seriously fun musical battle at beat-feast Hip Hop v R&B, held at Dalston venue Birthdays, where Shortee Blitz, CJ Beatz, Spin Doctor and Mr Thing spin much-loved anthems and classic jams. Funkier flavours are to be found at the South London Soul Train NYE in Peckham’s CLF Art Café, where Jazzheadchronic, Perry Louis and many more spin soul, rare groove, boogie, spacey jazz and raw funk over four floors.

Riotously fun party Supa Dupa Fly lands at Brixton’s Plan B, throwing around all the ’90s and noughties hip hop, garage and R&B your heart desires. UK garage ledge Sticky will be spinning the tunes alongside Emily Rawson and Fearney at this supa-fly and super-fun night.

  8. Searching for something different?

Balance your partying with a bit of booze-fuelled thinking at the Sounds Familiar Music Quiz, held at central London pub Jerusalem, where you can argue answers with your pals in various themed rounds (including ‘Office Party’ and ‘Are You Ready to Rock?’) until 11pm, before things turn into a disco.

It’s easy to forget that not everyone wants to get sozzled at New Year, so well done to the team behind DryScene Presents: Alcohol-Free New Year’s Eve Party at Philbeach Hall (near Earl’s Court tube). There’ll be mocktails, live jazz, a DJ and a refreshing lack of drunken oafs.

Really, though, December 31 is all about playing golf at an intergalactic disco, so thank Christ for the bizarre gem that is NYE Golfing in Outer Space at Shoreditch warehouse Factory 7: an indoor crazy golf course + space rave theme + top DJs Maribou State and Artwork playing disco + posh burgers = one truly cosmic party.
