The world music choir, Songlines, performs 'The Ballad of Those Who Drink the Sun', a song cycle that loosely follows the events of Turkish poet Nazim Hizkmet's life, his many loves in letters and poems from prison. The original cantata composed for the centenary of Hikmet's birth in 2002 has been updated and revised by Sarah Jewell, Musical Director of Songlines, reflecting the current times of mass global protest, the search for alternatives and the race to save the natural world. The Turkish baritone and actor Unal Unaydin takes the part of the poet and pianist Nick Bowers-Broadbent and cellist Kate Shortt accompany the 40-strong choir. Poetry sung in English.
