Calling all closet dancers, bedroom boppers, movers, shakers and exhibitionists. Artist Geraldine Pilgrim is recruiting 100 members of the public to take part in her delight of a show, 'Handbag', a celebration of dancing round your handbag, no less. Not only is this a big-grin-inducing, life-affirming performance opportunity; it's also a chance to be part of the Peopling the Palace festival, which is opening up the nineteenth-century People's Palace on Mile End Road to the public once more.
You might have passed the handsome neo-classical entrance on the 25 bus and noticed the elegant exterior carvings by Eric Gill. Originally designed in the 1880s as a 'palace of delight' and dedicated to the education and recreation of the people of the East End, the People's Palace was rebuilt as an Art Deco concert hall in the '30s following a fire and is now part of Queen Mary college. But from February 17-24 the venue becomes a palace of delight once more, opening to the public with a progressive programme of live art, film, immersive performance and a tea dance.
Here's your chance to play a part. Men and women aged 16 plus can apply, regardless of experience. You'll need to be available for rehearsals on the evenings of February 18 and 19 and from 1pm onwards on the performance day, February 24. Email jessica@artsadmin.co.uk to put your name down.
