Swedish choreographer Fredrik Rydman creates a twenty-first century take on 'Swan Lake', bringing in street dance, contemporary dance, pop music, electro, smartphones and special effects to transform the ballet classic. His 'Swan Lake Reloaded' turns evil sorcerer Rothbart into a pimp and drug dealer, while his swan maidens become heroin-addicted prostitutes. When one of them, Odette, falls in love with Prince Siegfried, Rothbart uses any means he can to keep her under his 'spell'. It's a long way from Petipa, that's for sure. Rydman was a founder member of street dance company Bounce, whose 'Insane in the Brain' was a hip hop version of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest', so he's no stranger to a radical rewrite.
