Ears open, London film fans. While you've been getting into the Christmas spirit, Fox Searchlight Pictures has been gearing up to release their latest must-see film: ‘The Favourite’.

Previewing across 12 London cinemas from Boxing day, Yorgos Lanthimos's royal romp stars a trio of thespian behemoths: Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz. And we don't want to give too much away, but you can expect a heap of hilariously devilish behaviour.

Watch on as Stone's and Weisz's characters fight it out for the affections of the unstable Queen Anne (Colman) in her highly competitive court – and catch some pineapple eating and duck racing, too, of course. Yep, this may be a period comedy, but it's wild and unique (which let's be honest, is to be expected from the director of ‘The Lobster’ and ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’).

In fact, when our Time Out film team saw the film, they called it a ‘swooningly rude period piece – a royal flush’ and a ‘Lewis Carroll semi-comic nightmare, piling cattiness upon cattiness’. So tighten your corsets, people, ‘The Favourite’ is a shrewd, scheming, gossipy retelling of actual historical events, which shouldn't be missed.

What's more, ‘The Favourite’ has well and truly broken the British Independent Film Awards – scooping up an astonishing 10 wins (yep, that's a record). It's also picked up the ‘Grand Jury prize’ and ‘Best Actress’ gong at the Venice Film Awards and is nominated for 5 Golden Globes – including Best Picture. Pretty greedy, really.

‘The Favourite’ will open at cinemas across the rest of the country on Tuesday January 1 2019.
